Cigar review of the Davidoff Maduro Toro with ice wine pairing

Watch the video :)

Watch the video and see what happened when I had the ice wine in the freezer for 36 hours.

I'm really looking forward to seeing how it tastes. The set is ready.

I'm really looking forward to seeing how it tastes. The set is ready.

A rich palette of aromas unfolds from the very first puff: wood and earth initially dominate the taste profile. But over time, a peaty note develops, accompanied by a hint of leather. And the best thing? The entire smoking experience is accompanied by a light but permanent sweetness that resonates in the background. A fascinating interplay of aromas that won't let you go.

The pairing

You put the ice wine in the fridge and then in the freezer for 2-3 hours before tasting. I made the mistake of freezing the bottle for 36 hours. Of course that's not possible.

The combination with ice wine. Get ready for a flavor explosion! The ice wine, which I froze - well, I did it wrong - for 36 hours, unfolds an intense grape note in combination with the Davidoff Maduro Toro, which takes the experience to a new level. However, the ice wine had to thaw first. That's right: you put the ice wine in the freezer for 2-3 hours and store it in the fridge beforehand anyway.

The combination with the Davidoff Maduro Toro is excellent! I bought a box of the Robusto and am also looking forward to the pairing.

What is ice wine?

Ice wine is a special type of dessert wine made from grapes that are frozen on the vine. The special thing about ice wine is that the grapes are harvested at sub-zero temperatures and then pressed while still frozen. This process results in the water in the grapes remaining as ice, while the concentrated juice with a high sugar content is extracted. The result is a very sweet wine with a pronounced acid balance that has aromas of tropical fruit, honey, citrus and other intense fruit notes.

The ice wine I tasted is called MUFFATO. The grapes for this wine come from the "Castello della Sala" winery (Tuscany, grown in vineyards at altitudes between 200 and 400 meters. The morning mist favors the infection of the grapes with Botrytis cinerea, known as noble rot. This fungal infection reduces the water content in the grapes, which in turn intensifies the flavors. The must is obtained by gentle pressing and then fermented in steel tanks for around 20 days. The resulting sweet wine then matures in barrique barrels.

Is the price of the cigar justified and what is special about the wrapper?

And the price of CHF 54.00 for the cigar? Every centime is justified. The Davidoff Maduro Toro is rolled with a wrapper for which only tobacco leaves from the Corte #7 leaf stage are used; they are almost at the top of the plant. Only two leaves grow in this leaf stage, which receive a particularly large amount of sunlight. These wrappers look a little more rustic than you are used to from Davidoff. But that is quite normal for these wrapper leaves. A few smaller leaves grow on top, but these are not used.

To create the sweet notes that are typical of a true maduro taste experience, Davidoff has invested 16 months of fermentation and 2 years of ageing in this cigar. All formats are wrapped in a dark Ecuadorian wrapper of the Corte #7 leaf grade, which accounts for almost half of the overall aroma. These two Corte #7 leaves are particularly thick and oily and have received the perfect amount of sunlight for this wrapper leaf. Because these two leaves are so rich, they require more elaborate processing to achieve their full flavor profile and silkiness.

The wrapper is beautiful. Although it is more rustic. But this is because only the top two leaves of the tobacco plant were used.

The entire fermentation process is not published. The result is worth every second of patience.

It glows excellently. The occasional wave burn usually corrects itself. The flame can help from time to time.

What do you think?

The cigar continues to develop during the smoke. A subtle sweetness can already be perceived in the first half. It remains until the finale.

So, after this insight into the art of the wrapper and the extraordinary pairing, I hope I have piqued your curiosity. The Davidoff Maduro Toro is not just a cigar, it is an experience that reflects patience, passion and a deep understanding of the material. Don't miss the opportunity to enjoy this masterpiece. See you next time!
