From chauffeur chaos to documentary film shoot: the Habanos Festival 2024

Imagine the Habanos Festival 2024: You pack your suitcase and fly to Havana, Cuba, to experience the legendary Habanos Festival 24. Sounds like a dream, doesn't it? For me and Claudia Puszkar, this dream will soon become reality. We have the privilege of making a documentary about the festival and I'm really looking forward to taking you on this adventurous journey, and preparations are in full swing. Suitcases packed? Soon. Camera equipment? I think I have everything, don't you? But the transportation on location? That's where the adventure begins before it's even started.

The driver chaos: Cuba live ❤️

We thought to ourselves: "Let's organize a driver to take us through the streets of Havana". No sooner said than done. The first driver we asked made us an offer that was so tempting that even Cuban rum looked old in comparison. I had to ask twice: "Have you even read our program?" As soon as I asked, the price shot up. Still within reason, but my confidence? Gone like the smoke from a good Cohiba.

Just when I thought everything was settled, a message fluttered into the house: "When and where should I pick you up next Monday?" I thought I hadn't read correctly. Our flight to Cuba isn't for another six weeks! 🤯 Obviously the program wasn't that interesting for him after all, because he didn't read it at all. So short process: off we go and back to the start.

A huge thank you to Thomas Portmann (La Casa del Habano St. Gallen by Urs Portmann), who stood by us in this chaotic situation. With his help, we finally found a second driver who not only seemed reliable but was also able to keep to our tight schedule.

Now that the transportation issue has been resolved, it's time for the final technical details. From February 26 to March 1, Claudia and I will be exploring every nook and cranny of the festival, attending seminars and discovering one or two insider tips for you. Our goal? A documentary that is as colorful and lively as Cuba itself. The live premiere? On YouTube, of course - so you can watch it from the comfort of your own home.
