Caldwell Savages Corona Larga in a 3-way test

Caldwell Savages Corona Larga

Caldwell Savages Corona Larga in the 3er test. The second anilla reads: LLTK BEN. This Savages line is an extension of the LLTK Long Live The King line. The Savages Corona Larga is really long: 203 mm. It's so long that it can be too long for ashtrays. Well, if it doesn't fit, then it's made to fit. By slowly savouring it and letting it smoulder and smoulder and smoulder and smoulder... By the way: there's a Boveda pouch in the box. Fantastic idea. It keeps the cigars moisturised during transport. By the way: you can read the story about Robert Caldwell here: The Swiss CALDWELL story: drugs, dropping out of school and the urge to master life.

A cigar test is subjective

Note: How a cigar tastes is influenced by personal taste preferences, taste memories, the form of the day, what you have eaten or drunk beforehand. Even the lighting in the room has an influence on the flavour you experience. The notes described here therefore do not necessarily correspond to your own impressions.

Elegant and classic format. 203 mm long. It does not fit on this beautiful ashtray from Nüesch humidors. This is not a fault of the cigar. It is not a fault of the ashtray.

Very nice anillas. They perfectly match the wrapper and the overall appearance of the cigar.

Personal impressions of enjoying the Caldwell Savages Corona Larga

First half of this Savages cigar

  • Tongue, palate: slightly salty and it gets saltier in the first half - super interesting / some pepper / a kind of „freshness“... no idea how I come up with that... every now and then there's a little boost of freshness... ah - now I know: I should close the window, it draws. / Nutty and a little creamy at the same time
  • RetronasalIt smells and „tastes“ like tree bark when you light it. Not the entire wood, but just the bark.
  • R+ ZiZo vacuum technology: Salt / pepper and seasoning
  • Umami: slightly juicy and slightly meaty
  • Strength 3/5

Second half of the Savages

  • The salt is minimised / lots of nuts and a little less creamy / pepper with cocoa / super nice roasted aromas of lots of coffee beans / definitely light wood and ...freshness... Oh, freshness, I should really close the window now!

The explanations on the insert show: CALDWELL is a bit crazy. Great!

What is „retronasal“?

Retronasal cigar enjoyment enhances the flavour. What it is, why it works and how to do it please read here. Take a look at the ZiZo vacuum technology in particular. Incredible enhancement of cigar enjoyment!

There! Now it fits on the ashtray.

What is the „R+ ZiZo vacuum technology“?

This is the consummate pleasure of a cigar. Hard to describe. I'll try. Here's an example: a baby sucking on a dummy. Try this technique with a cigar. Very little smoke gets into the mouth. But it passes over the tongue and goes straight through the nose. I tried it with about 10 cigars before I mastered it. Please be very careful with this technique when practising: the smoke hit the back of my larynx several times. That was really bad. But now that I can do it, it's a perfect technique for enjoying a cigar.

What is umami?

This means „savouriness“, „spicy“, „essence“, „meaty“. This mixture of taste sensations is perceived on the centre of the tongue. You can find a good article about this on Wikipedia

Non Cuba cigars and the important acclimatisation process

Acclimatisation recommendation: 2 days in the humidor with cellophane.

The fact is: you don't know when the cigar was imported and how long it rested with the importer. You also don't know how long the resting phase was at the retailer. Cigars are in shock after being transported from the tropics to Europe. They have to acclimatise first. The industry is sales-orientated. The cigars have to be sold quickly. Therefore, they may not taste as they should.

If you buy single copies

Place the cigar with the cellophane in the humidor. If your cigar does not have cellophane: Put them in tubos and then in the humidor. Or you can put the individual cigars in a Zippo bag and put a small Boveda inside. You then seal it and place it in the humidor. Cigars that are stored open without cellophane or a box lose their flavour very quickly. This is demonstrated in this article with experiments.

Conclusion Caldwell Savages Corona Larga in the 3er test

I have tested 3 Savages copies of this format. Such a beautiful and elegant format. Very nice balance. A kind of tingle dances on the tongue. What I found interesting about this Savages was my impression of nuttiness and creaminess at the same time. Difficult to describe: As if I were chewing nuts and drinking a coffee with its natural foam and rinsing my mouth. Simply pure pleasure. Damn. CALDWELL can really make cigars.

The two Anillas are a perfect match for the Savages wrapper. The paper is great and the colours are perfect. The draw resistance is optimal. The ash is reasonably stable. It does not last very long and some caution is required. The burn is good to very good. The occasional wave burn corrects itself very quickly.

I really like this cigar. It's an eye-catcher because of its long and slim format and the two really beautiful anillas.
