Boveda starter kit test: What are the kits good for?

In a garage and NOT successful overnight

Boveda is a well-known product. But how did it all start?

In early 1997, Boveda was founded in a garage and launched a product on the market that would go beyond humidors and change the cigar industry. But not overnight.

In the first 10 years, the founding team lived off their passion for coffee and little else. Although they believed in the product, no one had yet understood what it was all about. The first moist pads were offered as a complete solution, mainly at cigar fairs. The industry was enthusiastic because the cigars were so well protected. Over the next three decades, Boveda became famous.

But the pads don't just provide cigars with the moisture they need! The pads are also very popular worldwide for other purposes: for wooden instruments, cannabis and food (such as coffee beans, spices and even sweets such as gummy bears.

Boveda Starter Kit: The test and 14 days of humidor break-in

Boveda Starter Kit Test: Large pack and small pack. I am ready! Humidor on the left: Adorini Novara L (space for up to 150 cigars in Corona format). Humidor on the right: Adorini Firenze (space for up to 75 cigars in Corona format).

The large pack contains four Boveda (i.e. 4 x 84% and 4 x 72%), the small pack contains two (2 x 84% and 2 x 72%). The Boveda Starter Kit is easy to use.

I put all the accessories in the humidors so that everything is humidified. The lid remains closed for 14 days.

In the small humidor, the hygrometer displayed 70% humidity right from the start. Even after about 15 minutes, when the photos were taken, the display had not changed. Both humidors are equipped with SENSIRION sensors. I can monitor them via Bluetooth on my cell phone. I'm looking forward to seeing how the Boveda Starter Kit works!

The lids remain closed for 14 days.

Recorded on 01.11.2023, 09:17 am. The humidity continues to rise in both humidors.

After 14 days: Did everything work out? And what happens next?

14 days later: The relative humidity was a constant 80.8% during the entire time.

After 14 days, I opened both humidors. And indeed: the wood felt moist, the break-in had worked. Now comes the next step. The 84% pads come out and the 72% pads go in. According to the instructions, all 4 pads (72%) now go into the large humidor and 2 pads (also 72%) into the small humidor. Close the lid and wait to see what happens to the relative humidity.

I personally doubt that you need all the pads in these humidors after breaking them in; however, that's what the instructions say. In my opinion, the instructions are not that foolproof. A beginner will probably follow the instructions exactly and then the cigars will be stored too moist.

It depends on the size of the humidor. If you have a very large table humidor that can hold more than 200 cigars, then you may need all 4 pads with 72%. Just try it out.

I'm going to leave it for an hour without cigars.

The large humidor

According to the instructions, I now insert four other pads, namely those with 72%. Personally, I think there are too many pads for this size of humidor. I would have liked to put in two or just one. I'll try it for an hour without cigars first.

The small humidor

Here too, I would only put in a new pad with 72%. Here, too, I first try it for an hour without a cigar.

An hour later without cigars: the humidors are too damp. Now I put cigars in and check again after an hour.

An hour later with the cigars

Contrary to the instructions, only filled with one pad:

Condition with cigars and one bag of Boveda per humidor, 1 hour and 20 minutes after filling. As I suspected, one bag is completely sufficient. The relative humidity is too high. Here I recommend leaving the lid open a crack until the whole thing has harmonized.

Large humidor with approx. 100 cigars of various sizes. The humidity drops immediately after opening. One bag of Boveda 72% is sufficient.

Small humidor for approx. 36 cigars of different sizes. Here, too, the humidity drops immediately after opening. A bag of Boveda with 72% is also sufficient here.

Conclusion

This is a great set to set up a humidor. It is very easy to use. It takes 14 days for the wood of the humidor to become moist. Depending on the size of the humidor, one Boveda bag may be enough and not double the amount described in the instructions.
