The ember is more than just a burning tip

Several processes take place simultaneously at the embers. In the outer layer, the tobacco reacts with oxygen and burns. Immediately in front of this, the unburned material is heated to a high temperature. As a result, water and volatile components evaporate, whilst other substances decompose due to the heat.

A large proportion of the smoke is therefore not produced solely by combustion. Vapourisation and thermal decomposition in the area in front of the embers also contribute to this. These zones are close together and move through the cigar together as it is smoked. The ember is therefore not a fixed point, but a moving reaction zone. Ahead of it, the tobacco is heated; within it, it is transformed; and behind it, ash and charred residues remain.

The ash also serves a physical purpose. It can partially shield the embers from heat loss and direct airflow. If it falls away, the conditions around the embers change. This demonstrates just how sensitive the combustion process is to air and heat.

What happens on a train

Between two puffs, the cigar continues to smoulder slowly. When you take a puff, additional air flows through the burning end. The embers receive more oxygen, the reaction is briefly intensified, and the combustion zone moves further into the tobacco. A cooling phase then begins. If there are sufficient pauses, the cigar can release some of the excess heat. If, on the other hand, puffs follow one another in quick succession, there is less time for this to happen. The average temperature rises.

You can think of this process in the same way as a log fire. A draught fans the embers. If fresh air is constantly supplied, the material burns faster and hotter. With a cigar, the same thing happens on a smaller scale and within a tightly rolled tobacco body. The smoking pace therefore not only determines how long a cigar burns; it directly influences its temperature and the speed at which the embers move through the tobacco. And thus, it also affects the flavour of the cigar.

Heat and moisture travel through the cigar

Tobacco contains residual moisture. As the ember approaches, the unburned section is heated and some of the water evaporates. At the same time, hot smoke flows through the cooler sections towards the mouthpiece. As it does so, it cools down, and some of its less volatile components can be deposited in the tobacco. The cigar therefore does not dry out evenly: its internal condition depends on how far a particular section is from the ember and how long it has already been exposed to the flow of warm smoke.

Why the final third often feels more intense

At the start, the smoke has to travel a relatively long distance through unburned tobacco. This section absorbs heat, slows the airflow and traps some of the condensable components of the smoke. As the smoking session progresses, this distance shortens. The smoke reaches the mouth more quickly and has less time to cool down inside the cigar. At the same time, the remaining tobacco is already heated and has been exposed to smoke for a longer period.

The final third may therefore seem warmer, denser or more intense in flavour. This is not due to a sudden new blend. Rather, the warmth, gases and smoke particles reach the palate under different conditions.

The extent of this effect depends on the shape, tobacco density, construction and smoking pace. A long, slender cigar does not necessarily behave in the same way as a short cigar with a large ring gauge.

How the train is changing

The draw is primarily determined by the construction: by the quantity and arrangement of the tobacco, the tightness of the roll, and the air channels between the leaves. However, the cut also plays an important role. It forms the opening through which the smoke escapes. If it is too small, it creates additional resistance, even if the cigar has been rolled perfectly.

The size of this opening depends on the type of cut and the depth of the incision. A shallow cut, which opens up only a small part of the head, can restrict the draught. A straight cut usually exposes a larger area, whilst round and notched cuts channel the smoke through a more restricted opening. The key factor is not which method is fundamentally the best, but whether the cut is executed cleanly and suits the shape of the cigar. If the cut is too deep, the wrapper may come loose; a crooked or frayed cut can also impair the flow of smoke.

Whilst smoking, this initial condition does not remain entirely unchanged either. The tobacco heats up and may become softer in places or expand slightly. Fine particles and condensed smoke components may accumulate in the gaps and at the cut end. At the same time, the length of the cigar decreases. Depending on its construction and smoking characteristics, this may result in the draw becoming slightly tighter or, occasionally, more open.

A carefully crafted and properly cut cigar should remain pleasant to smoke for long periods. If the draw is very tight right from the start, it is therefore worth checking the cut first and, if necessary, carefully widening it. If the resistance persists or changes significantly whilst smoking, this may be due to the cigar being rolled too tightly or unevenly.

How Blender takes smoke behaviour into account

A master blender does not develop a cigar with just the first few minutes in mind. He must know how the tobaccos behave as the ember draws nearer, the temperature rises and the smoke path shortens. To achieve this, he carefully balances the tobacco varieties, leaf positions and proportions. A strong tobacco may be barely noticeable at the start but come to the fore more clearly later on. Another leaf may provide structure or help ensure that the cigar does not feel coarse as the heat builds.

The planned format is also part of the development process. Because length and ring gauge alter the structure and the smoke path, the same blend can produce different effects in different formats. A well-crafted blend does not hinder the physical development of the cigar. It is composed in such a way that the cigar retains its fundamental character and balance despite changing conditions.

What you can do to influence your smoking habits

The biggest direct influence you have is the pace at which you smoke. Take your time and allow the cigar plenty of time to rest between puffs. If the smoke becomes noticeably warmer or harsher, set the cigar down for a moment. Pulling too hard or too frequently usually makes the problem worse. A short break is more effective.

You don’t need to tap off the ash after every puff. A solid column of ash can be left to stand for a while. If it gets too long or unstable, you can carefully tap it into the ashtray. Also keep an eye on the burn line and the draw. Minor variations are a natural part of the smoking process. Significant deviations, however, may indicate that the cigar is being smoked too hot or that it is not burning evenly due to its construction.
