Review Davidoff Puro Dominicano Perfecto
Review Davidoff Puro Dominicano Perfecto / A Dominican Puro - Davidoff with a black ring that doesn't hesitate for a second - and delivered immediately. Spoiler alert: I am completely thrilled. I'm not writing this because Oettinger Davidoff is a customer of mine, but because this cigar simply delivers. Point. I smoked five examples of the Perfecto, ring gauge 50, 2 cm diameter, 14 cm length. And yes: if I were to work with rating points, this would be 97. Without hesitation.

The moment
There are those rare moments when you immediately sense that nothing is being reinvented here, but that something great is being consistently continued. Ten years after the last Davidoff Black Band Collection, this idea is being continued in 2026 - and it is magnificent. Comparable to the film The Godfather IINo variation, no cosmetic fine-tuning. Instead, a genuine line with a clear attitude and character that seamlessly follows on from the Davidoff Black Band Collection - and at the same time confidently takes the next step.
I was able to smoke this world first in February 2026, followed by an exclusive reception at Maison Davidoff in Basel in March. In a small group Sam Reuter, Head Product Development at Oettinger Davidoff AG, explains what is behind this cigar - and why it is more than just another format for Davidoff. Swiss trade media gathered at Oettinger Davidoff in Basel on 10/03/2016.
I lit my first one early in the morning at 07:15. Quiet, coffee, clear head. If you want to know whether a cigar has substance, that's an honest time. Within two seconds, my mouth was completely filled - not just with smoke, but with flavour. Deep, round, present.
By the way: There will be three formats of the Davidoff Puro Dominicano when it is launched in April 2026:
- Short Robusto: 52 RG x 4 1/2“ / Ø 2.1 x 11.5 cm / CHF 20.30
- Corona Larga: 44 RG x 5 7/8“ / Ø 1.8 x 14.9 cm / CHF 23.90
- And the Perfecto that I tested: 50 RG x 5 1/2“ / Ø 2 cm x 14.0 cm / CHF 25.80
Setup & cold draw
I deliberately cut the Perfecto at an angle. This way, the smoke flows directly to the palate, cools quickly and remains pleasantly soft. The cold draw was interesting, slightly sweet and clean. I don't attach too much importance to the cold draw - the truth is revealed when smoking - but here it definitely whetted the appetite.
The first five minutes of my Davidoff Puro Dominicano Perfecto review
As soon as you light it up, you can see where the journey might take you. Deep tobacco flavour, very creamy, slightly sweet, with a sensational, pleasant astringency. No scratching, no biting, not even in the nose - but Immediate balance. That is extraordinary. You should see my astonished face now and how a smile of pleasure spreads across my lips. Did I mention the balance? This extremely harmonious balance? I wonder: „How do they actually manage that?“

Flavour progression
First half
Creamy, sweetish, tart. In addition, a clear umami impression, almost meaty. Everything seems dense, but not heavy. The flavours are broad on the palate, nothing stands out; the flavours alternate, perhaps the deep tobacco taste is what I notice most as a constant in the foreground. And this balance!

Second half in review Davidoff Puro Dominicano Perfecto
Wood and earth come more to the fore. The creaminess remains, albeit somewhat more restrained. The sweetness gains slightly in intensity. The strength levels off neatly at around 3/5 without ever being overpowering. The deep tobacco flavour becomes even deeper, perhaps even slightly peaty (if that's the best way I can put it). And again: This balance!

Draught & combustion
The draw resistance is optimal - remarkable for this large cut surface. This speaks for excellent rolling quality and a perfectly matched degree of humidity as well as good ageing and acclimatisation in our home climes. The burn is calm and even, and no corrections were necessary with my specimens. Except for one specimen, I only had to re-light three times very briefly in the second half. And apart from that: perfect burning.

Background knowledge
Ten years after the last cigar with a black band, Davidoff Cigars presents the Davidoff Puro Dominicano, a new line within the Black Band Collection. Exclusively Dominican tobaccos from six different terroirs, total age 32 years, composed after years of experimentation. In addition to the Perfecto, Short Robusto and Corona Larga are also available.
The Davidoff Puro Dominicano consists mainly of higher-grade tobacco leaves. Each of these tobaccos contributes individual flavours - from sweet and creamy to rich and spicy. The result is a Dominican Puro with the intensity you would expect from a Black Band - and the elegance that Davidoff stands for.

Conclusion
The Davidoff Puro Dominicano Perfecto is not a loud cigar. It impresses with its depth, balance and substance. For me, it is one of the most exciting new products of recent years - and one that I would smoke again at any time. That reminds me: I have to order this format immediately and another one too. No, wrong: I order all three formats.
