The problems in the years 2020 to 2022

When the COVID-19 pandemic began in 2020, the problems of non-Cuban cigar producers outside Cuba also began. It was in the summer of 2020 when a cigar manufacturer told me: „There will be huge supply shortages in the next few years.“ But back then, availability was still very high. But it started around autumn 2020: cigars were being exported more or less „drop by drop“. As a result, the availability of Non Cuba cigars plummeted by up to 30% (depending on the importers' source).

Consumers wanted to buy certain cigars, but they weren't available. In my job, I also realised this; the media plans of my advertising clients were constantly being changed and adapted to the circumstances.

In Switzerland, the complete mask requirement has been lifted as of 01.04.2022. All we can do at the moment is wait and see how exports return to the familiar level, depending on how the pandemic situation in the cigar-producing countries changes for the better.

Non Cuba cigars and the difference in flavour depending on the country of origin

What about the difference in the flavour of cigars depending on the country of origin? I would like to describe it very simply and roughly here. However, the list is kept very simple.

• Dom. Republic: Rather light cigars
• Cuba: Rather medium to strong cigars
• Nicaragua: Rather strong cigars
• Brazil: Rather medium-strength cigars
• Honduras: Rather light to medium-strength cigars
• Costa Rica: Rather light to medium-strength cigars

Why is this list outdated?

This list is tricky and Turkish. Because cigars are not always made from tobacco from a single country. Cigars are made from tobacco from different countries. Depending on how the master blender wants a cigar to taste, he composes the leaves with their characteristics from different countries.

So, in my opinion, this list is outdated and should be treated with caution. For example, there are also light cigars from Cuba. Not all of them are medium to strong. The Fonseca, for example, is a very light cigar. After a storage period of 2 to 3 years, it tastes excellent.

Another example: the Avo Limited Edition 2019 is produced in the Dom. Republic. But it has a strength of 4/5, so it's no lightweight.

Or the Joya de Nicaragua Classico Viajante from Nicaragua, strength 2/5.

Today, the country of origin does not indicate whether a cigar is strong or less strong. The Davidoff Nicaragua, for example, comes from the Dom. Republic because it is produced there. But it consists of 100% Nicaraguan tobacco. The cigars are medium strength, about 3/5 strength, but if you were to go by the above list, they would have to have a strength of 1/5 to 2/5.
