Davidoff Puro Dominicano - an afternoon in Basel

On 10/03/2016, a tasting with Swiss trade media took place at Oettinger Davidoff in Basel. Under the expert guidance of Sam Reuter, Head Product Development at Oettinger Davidoff AG, we experienced a pleasant tasting. While the cigars were being prepared, a journey into the heart of the Dominican Republic opened up - to where the tobacco grows that later forms the basis for the Davidoff Puro Dominicano forms.

We were able to taste the new product at the Swiss Trade Media Meeting.

The Davidoff Puro Dominicano will be available in three formats:

I tested the Davidoff Puro Dominicano Perfecto extensively in February 26. The review will be published for the launch on 23.04.26.

Ten years after the launch of the last cigar with a black band, Davidoff is expanding its Black Band Collection with a new line: Davidoff Puro Dominicano. It is designed to take aficionados on a flavourful journey to the Dominican Republic.

Davidoff Puro Dominicano and the Black Band Collection

The Black Band Collection has always been a line for aficionados looking for intense flavour experiences. Innovative blends from well-known tobacco-growing regions characterise this series. With the Davidoff Puro Dominicano Davidoff complements the existing Escurio, Nicaragua and Yamasá lines.

The Dominican Republic, traditionally known for mild and creamy tobaccos, shows in this cigar another side. The country's soils can be both rich and demanding, producing tobaccos with a distinctive character.

For the Davidoff Puro Dominicano Davidoff's master blenders selected tobaccos from six Dominican terroirs. After years of intensive experimentation, a blend was finally created that is intended to achieve a special balance: a full-bodied Dominican puro with the intensity you would expect from a black-ringed cigar and the sophistication that characterises every Davidoff creation.

Javier González, SVP Head Global Marketing & Innovation at Oettinger Davidoff, explains that the Davidoff Puro Dominicano to strengthen the foundation of the Black Band Collection. At the same time, the line emphasises the tobacco heritage of the Dominican Republic and reflects the company's commitment to innovation and craftsmanship. For consumers, the cigar is designed to offer an experience that is both deeply Dominican and unmistakably Davidoff - warm, rich and complex.

Davidoff Puro Dominicano - inspired by Dominican amber

The Davidoff Puro Dominicano is inspired by Dominican amber. This is formed deep in the earth and is moulded over time into a warm, glowing natural jewel. This image serves as inspiration for the blend of the cigar.

The cigar consists mainly of higher-grade tobacco leaves from six Dominican terroirs. Each of these tobaccos contributes its own flavours - from sweet and creamy to rich and spicy. Davidoff describes the result as a kind of rough diamond that has been refined by craftsmanship.

The pleasure begins with a rich prelude; I can confirm that. I have tasted all three formats so far. Flavours of dark chocolate, wood and some leather form the introduction. Nutty and sweet flavours give the smoke warmth and depth. Each format tastes slightly different.

The flavour opens up further in the middle section. Earth and peat emerge accompanied by a wonderful sweetness. Finish: Mineral and salty accents increase the complexity, while retronasal bread, bitter almond and black pepper become perceptible.

The format is particularly noteworthy Corona Larga. Its ring gauge of 44 symbolises the year 1844 - the year of independence of the Dominican Republic. This format is unique within the Davidoff portfolio. The slim ring gauge and length are intended to allow a smoother and slower flavour development.

For aficionados who prefer faster development, the Short Robusto a more intense presentation of the blend with a shorter smoking time. The line is complemented by a Perfecto Figurado, whose conical head and foot emphasise the role of the wrapper and binder. This format is also considered exclusive within the Davidoff portfolio and requires the utmost precision when rolling.
