Angel Cuesta Salomones, the hidden pearl

Wow, the Angel Cuesta Salomones cigar from J.C. Newman is really an insider tip that I have to share! I cut it at an angle and it has an amazing effect: the smoke actually becomes cooler on the palate - a small technique with a big effect! Thanks to Daniel Schneebeli from Don Alejandro's Lounge for this tip.

Tasting notes of the Angel Cuesta Salomones

Immediately after lighting up, I could feel a fascinating combination of slightly salty and slightly sweet on my lips and tongue - a truly fantastic experience! From the start, this cigar shows a lot of depth: a mixture of wood and nut, with a hint of bittersweet and slightly acidic - an excellent balance!

Great format! Salomones: 178 mm length, 57 mm ring.

During smoking, it develops even more aromas of cocoa, slightly bitter and sweet at the same time, as well as more nuts and a light earthy note. The burn is uncomplicated and pleasant.

In the second half I had to relight it several times, for about 5 minutes, but after that everything was back to normal. The 92 points it earned speak for themselves! If it hadn't been for the crooked burn, the cigar would even have scored 94 points. I would rate its strength on a scale of 3/5.

I cut the Angel Questa Salomones at an angle. The smoke is actually cooler on the palate and therefore you can taste the flavors better.

If you have the chance, you should definitely try them out! You can find them at Don Alejandro's Lounge in Dietlikon. It's worth it!

Lighting is easy. It is rolled so well that there is no wedge burn at the beginning. This often occurs with this format, as the tobacco has to be placed and rolled more carefully at the base of the cigar.

This historic cigar brand was first rolled a century ago and is named after Angel LaMadrid Cuesta, one of the founders of the famous Cuesta-Rey cigar brand. These cigars were the official cigar of King Alfonso XIII, who ruled Spain from 1886 to 1931.

History

A century ago, Angel Cuesta was one of the leaders of the cigar industry in Tampa. On the inside of each box of Angel Cuesta cigars is the following excerpt from a story by Angel Cuesta, in which he explains why Tampa was the "Fine Cigar Capital of the World":

If you are a man who enjoys a really good cigar, you have probably long since discovered the handmade Tampa cigar with its excellent smoking characteristics - exquisite, clear Havana tobacco at its finest! If you haven't made this discovery yet, we think it's time you did. And so we'll tell you how these cigars are made, and also about Tampa - because the history of fine cigars is inextricably linked to the history of Tampa.

Tampa, Florida

Tampa is today the vibrant metropolis on the west coast of Florida, the center of the most populous and prosperous area of Florida. Although it is the state's leading industrial city, it is also a vacation city - a beautiful place to work, live and play. It is a city of color and contrasts, of carnival-like merriment and progressive modern entrepreneurship. The Latin Quarter is a transfer from the old world to the new. This Latin Quarter, home to around 40,000 people of Spanish and Cuban descent, is where most of the cigar factories that produce these fine cigars are located.

The story of these cigars begins a long time ago. It begins in the mild, tropical climes of Cuba's picturesque tobacco plantations. It begins in the skillful fingers of the cigar maker, whose art is a legacy of the Old World. Yes, and it begins in the minds of a few enterprising men who had the foresight to recognize the advantages of Tampa as a potential cigar center.

Tampa, the cigar capital

It was Señor V. Martinez Ybor who paved the way for the movement that made Tampa the cigar capital of America. In 1869, Ybor had moved his factory from Havana to Key West to escape looting by Spanish volunteer troops. As others followed, Key West became the center of America's clear Havana industry.

Seventeen years later, Ybor and Eduardo Manrara, his partner, were looking for a more favorable location for their business and were impressed by Tampa's climatic and geographical possibilities as a production site. Tampa, then just a sprawling, lush frontier village, offered cigar makers a large tract of land, laying the foundation for one of the city's most important industries. Other attentive cigar merchants followed suit. Ybor's example and Tampa's rise to the center of cigar manufacturing in Florida became a fait accompli.

Today, the best cigars in the world are made in Tampa. Angel LaMadrid Cuesta
