2013, launch of Davidoff Nicaragua. It was the first Davidoff cigar with a black band.

Basel, Switzerland, June 2023: To mark the tenth anniversary year of the Nicaragua line, Davidoff is launching a limited-edition Gran Toro Cigar. With tobacco matured in rum barrels and a handsome cutter in the Davidoff Nicaragua design. The popular line has a special significance for the brand. Its market launch laid the foundation for the innovative Black Band Collection, which is now popular with aficionados worldwide.

In 2013, Davidoff Cigars challenged its aficionados to explore new flavours from other parts of the world with the then newly launched Davidoff Nicaragua line. The line was the first to feature a black band. This was an absolute novelty for Davidoff. «Up to that point, we had focussed on milder blends with our White Band Collection. In particular, we wanted to please our aficionados in search of a more intense palate stimulation.

We travelled the world to diversify our portfolio with tobacco varieties that grew under different conditions. We found what we were looking for in Nicaragua's volcanic soil - a fiery intensity that our master blenders knew how to tame and refine. They combined Davidoff sophistication with bittersweet intensity. This is how Davidoff Nicaragua was born,» explains Edward Simon, CMO at Oettinger Davidoff.

The wrapper, binder and filler have a combined age of 45 years.

«For the tenth anniversary of the line, our master blenders took on a new challenge. They created a cigar with Nicaraguan tobacco, whose blend provides even more depth. The Limited Edition Gran Toro cigar is reminiscent of the existing Nicaraguan blend. However, its flavour reaches a new level. Davidoff's master blenders have broken new ground to create an exciting flavour experience. In honour of the anniversary, they paid great attention to the maturity of the tobaccos. The wrapper, binder and filler tobaccos have a combined age of 45 years. Another speciality is the Estelí Seco tobacco in the filler. It was allowed to mature for a total of 6 months in a rum barrel - a first for Davidoff. This process creates a noticeable depth and complexity in the blend.

Flavour experience - the peak of Davidoff Nicaragua

Our elaborate barrel fermentation and the impressive age of the tobaccos ensure a full-bodied and refined cigar experience that is second to none. Another speciality is the Estelí Seco tobacco in the filler. It was allowed to mature for a total of 6 months in a rum barrel - a first for Davidoff. This process creates a noticeable depth and complexity in the blend.

At the beginning, the Gran Toro delights with complex nutty flavours. The Nicaraguan filler tobaccos contribute with notes of fresh spice and leather. The considerable age of the tobaccos provides a noticeable balance. The spicy stimulation slowly subsides in the second third. The flavour then develops into more intense notes of oak and café au lait. Exciting eucalyptus flavours also develop. Towards the end, the intensity increases again and the previous café au lait notes turn into those of black coffee. Aromas of fresh herbs join the omnipresent roasted flavours of this masterpiece. 60 to 70 minutes of beautifully filled time - a pleasure for every aficionado.

The 12 Gran Toro cigars come in a wooden box featuring the carefully lacquered Nicaragua pattern. The frame reveals the striking colour of the main line and the 10th anniversary sticker on the lid, specially designed for the special occasion.

The numbered accessory is made from brushed stainless steel in matt black with silver blades.

The high-quality Double Blade Cutter is the ideal complement to the Gran Toro cigar. The numbered accessory is made of brushed stainless steel in matt black with silver blades and features the typical Davidoff Nicaragua pattern. Elegant engravings such as the Davidoff logo on the blades or the serial number make each cutter a statement piece and collector's item.
