Review Villiger 1888 Nicaragua Churchill - Earthy elegance with character
Review Villiger 1888 Nicaragua Churchill / A Churchill that doesn't have to be loud to make an impression. I light the Villiger 1888 Nicaragua Churchill and immediately realise that this is not a cigar for those in a hurry. It feels like a quiet walk over dark earth after a warm rain. Everything is grounded, coherent, without gimmickry. That's exactly what makes it so pleasant. A wonderful cigar. If I were to award points, I would give it a 90. The tobacco is impressive: Ecuador wrapper, Nicaraguan binder, Nicaraguan filler (Seco Jalapa, Viso Jalapa, Ligero Condega) and USA (Pennsylvania).

QUICK BOX 5-second decision
For you, if you like it: a balanced, honest Nicaraguan blend | Strength / Smoke duration: 3/5, 130 minutes | 3 flavour points: Earth, leather, coffee

The moment
When you come to rest in the evening, the lights are dimmed and you have time, this cigar is perfect. No spectacle, no drama. Just you, the smoke and that long, calm puff that clears your head. To be honest: I smoked my first one at 06:20, fresh on the tongue. I enjoyed the other two cigars once after lunch around 2 pm and the third cigar in the morning at 10 am.
Setup & cold draw

The cut is clean. The first cold draw feels like a door opening - free, effortless, inviting. The scent of dry earth rises from the unlit foot, like a field after a warm summer's day. This is accompanied by fine leather, slightly roughened, and dark wood reminiscent of an old wine cellar. But clear, honest signals of what is about to come.
The first five minutes

The fire immediately takes hold evenly. The smoke is dense, creamy and surprisingly soft. Earth is at the centre, like freshly dug garden soil - but not too much, just right. Coffee, lightly roasted, without bitterness. Nothing bites, nothing pushes forward.
Flavour progression
First half
The cigar lies quietly in the moment, as if it had all the time in the world. Nothing tilts, nothing pushes. The leather is now more prominent, soft and supple, like a well-worn glove. A fine spiciness hovers over it, barely tangible, more fragrance than flavour, tickling the nose without ever becoming sharp. The sweetness only makes itself known quietly, like a distant echo - not present, but perceptible, as if you were remembering something pleasant without being able to name it exactly.

Second half
Now the cigar gains body, as if it were inhaling more deeply - noticeably stronger, but without ever weighing it down. Wood and earth become darker, richer, like the forest floor just before dusk. The smoke is creamy on the palate, soft and dense at the same time. Then this great umami wave opens up: savoury, almost meaty, like a slowly braised jus that lends depth and seriousness to the whole. You will search in vain for bitterness. Instead, there is a finely balanced, acidic-bitter balance - honest, dry, uncompromisingly tobacco. No chocolate sauce, no sugar icing. Exactly why: perfect.
Draught & combustion
The train is like walking calmly through an open space - nothing falters, nothing slows you down. From the first puff to the last, it remains even and reliable, so natural that you don't even think about it. The burn draws its line calmly downwards, like a candle on a windless table. No flickering, no stress. Relighting becomes a side note, interventions are rare. Everything seems harmonious. The wrapper glows lightly in gentle waves, lively but controlled, and almost always finds its way back to a straight line of its own accord. Only now and again do I touch it briefly with the flame - not to save it, but to accompany it. That's exactly how it should be.

My Review Villiger 1888 Nicaragua Churchill shows how much strength can lie in restraint. It doesn't want to impress you, it accompanies you. And that's exactly why I would smoke it again at any time.
