Everything is different and Cohiba wins
Everything is different in the second Corona year 2021. For the first time since 1999, the "Festival del Habano", the world's largest PR event for premium cigars, could not take place due to the pandemic. Habanos S.A. therefore organized the "Habanos World Days", a purely virtual cigar event that took place from 4 to 6 May. With this three-day program, Habanos S.A. managed to transform the festival into the digital world. Around 5,000 aficionadas and aficionados from all over the world took part. The 55th anniversary of the top Habanos brand Cohiba was the main theme of the event.
Virtually in Cuba
At the Habanos World Days, not only were the new Habanos products for 2021 presented, but 360° videos also allowed visitors to take a virtual tour of the tobacco plantations in Pinar del Rio, the Cohiba factory "El Laguito", a La Casa del Habano and a Cohiba Atmosphere restaurant. Experts presented combinations of selected Cohibas and spirits. The luxury brands S.T. Dupont and Zenith watches presented special products to mark Cohiba's 55th anniversary. One presentation was dedicated to the global success story of Cohiba. Habanos lovers could test their knowledge of Habanos in the "Habanos World Challenge" and win attractive prizes.
Winners will not be announced until 2022
The "Oscars of the cigar industry", the "Hombre del Habano" awards, will only be presented at the Festival del Habano next year. The annual press conference on Habanos' business development also took place at this event. In the pandemic year 2020, Habanos S.A. achieved a turnover of 507 million US dollars. This corresponds to a decrease of 4% compared to the previous year. Excluding Cuba, which was particularly affected by coronavirus and the loss of tourism, the decline was only 2%. Habanos' largest market is now China for the first time, followed by Spain, France, Germany and Switzerland. In terms of volume, Europe accounted for 60% of sales, the Asia-Pacific region for 16.2%, the Americas (excluding the USA, of course) for 13.6% and Africa and the Middle East for 10.4%.
The new products 2021
In the year of Cohiba's 55th anniversary, three new products from the top brand were presented:
Cohiba 55 Aniversario Limitada 2021
The Cohiba 55 Aniversario of the Edición Limitada 2021: The first-ever format with the vitola de galera "Victoria" has a length of 150 mm and a ring gauge of 57, making it the Cohiba with the largest ring gauge ever. It is sold in lacquered boxes containing 10 cigars. In addition to the usual second ring for Edición Limitada cigars, it has a third cigar ring at the foot with the brand's 55th anniversary logo.
Cohiba Ambar
The Cohiba Ambar will be part of the brand's standard range in future. This vitola is also completely new. With a length of 132 mm and a ring gauge of 53, it is also a large-volume cigar. The head of the cigar has a twisted pigtail, as we know it from the Cohiba Lanceros or the Coronas Especiales. It also comes onto the market in lacquered boxes containing 10 cigars.
Cohiba Ideales - Colección Habanos 2021
The Cohiba Ideales are the new format of the Colección Habanos. Only 3,000 individually limited boxes containing 20 pieces will be available worldwide. They will be offered exclusively at La Casas del Habano. The production name of the vitola, which is also being released for the first time, is "Modernas". With a length of 175 mm and a ring gauge of 56, this enormous cigar is the largest format of the new Cohibas.
Hoyo de Monterrey Monterreyes No.4 Limitada 2021
The Hoyo de Monterrey Monterreyes No.4 are another format of the Edición Limitada 2021. The newly developed vitola de galera is called "Maravillas No.4" and has a length of 145 mm with a very generous ring gauge of 55, making it one of the thickest Hoyos ever made. These cigars are offered in specially shaped lacquered boxes containing 10 cigars.
Bolivar Regentes Limitada 2021
The Bolívar Regentes are the third format of the Edición Limitada. The vitola with the production name "Discretos" has a length of 130 mm and a ring gauge of 52. They are sold in an elaborately crafted box containing 25 pieces.
Partagás Serie E No.2 Gran Reserva
The Partagás Serie E No.2 Gran Reserva Cosecha 2015 consists of tobaccos from the 2015 harvest and only 5,000 individually numbered boxes containing 15 pieces are produced. As usual, the boxes are painted glossy black. The cigars bear the typical black and gold second ring. The dimensions of the format called "Duke" correspond to those of the standard series with a length of 140 mm and a ring gauge of 54.
Montecristo Wide Edmundo
The Montecristo Wide Edmundo are an addition to the standard range of the Edmundo line of this traditional and world-famous brand. The vitola de galera is called "Duke No.3" and has a ring gauge of 54 with a length of 125 mm. It is offered in the typical Edmundo line boxes made of natural wood with 10 and 25 pieces. It will also be available in cardboard cases with 3 pieces each in aluminum tubos.
