SAN MARTÍN Robusto Review / I was particularly keen to try this new brand from Villiger. So, full of curiosity, I lit the SAN MARTÍN Robusto. With any new brand, the question is always what character the manufacturer intends to give its blend. The direction becomes clear within the first few minutes. The SAN MARTÍN Robusto does not rely on stark contrasts or a dramatic smoking profile. Its character stems from a calm balance, a consistent burn and a controlled build-up in strength. It is precisely this profile that defines the cigar right through to the end.

SAN MARTÍN Robusto Cigar Review: How does the smoke behave?

After just a few puffs, the SAN MARTÍN Robusto develops a consistent smoke flow. The volume of smoke remains constant throughout, without becoming noticeably denser or lighter. This consistent smoke profile ensures that the blend can unfold smoothly and remains stable throughout the entire smoking experience.

The ash is compact and indicates good rolling quality. However, you shouldn’t leave it to stand for too long, as it can suddenly break off and fall down.

Balance – How well does the blend work?

Immediately after lighting, there is a slight sharpness for a short while, which surprised me a little during my SAN MARTÍN Robusto review. However, this disappears completely after a few minutes. Afterwards, a balanced interplay develops between a subtle natural bitterness and a delicate acidity. Neither of these underlying flavours dominates the blend. Rather, they alternate unobtrusively, creating a calm, harmonious overall impression. As a result, the SAN MARTÍN always comes across as controlled and pleasantly approachable.

Development – Is the cigar changing?

This cigar is one of the more mellow examples of its class. Rather than undergoing marked changes, the blend evolves in small increments. It is precisely this consistency that defines the character of the cigar. The balance is maintained, whilst the blend gains a little more character as it develops, without straying from its fundamental structure.

Personally, I prefer cigars with more depth and a more complex flavour profile. However, that is a matter of personal taste. The SAN MARTÍN deliberately takes a different approach and remains true to its mellow character right to the end. So far, I’m really enjoying my SAN MARTÍN Robusto review – I’m really enjoying the cigar!

Strength – How does strength develop?

The SAN MARTÍN starts off very gently at around 1/5. It is only as things progress that the intensity slowly rises to around 3/5 . This gradual development feels natural and makes the cigar easy to enjoy throughout the entire smoking experience.

The die-cut cigar band is a striking design feature and gives the SAN MARTÍN a distinctive look.

Construction and burn – How clean is the cigar?

The roll quality gives the impression of meticulous craftsmanship. The draw resistance is just right, allowing for a consistent flow of smoke. The burn is also clean and steady. During my tastings, there was no need to relight the cigar. The ash builds up evenly, reinforcing the cigar’s overall impression of smoothness.

The effects of fermentation and ageing

No box date was available for the tasting in the SAN MARTÍN Robusto review; this is common with non-Cuban cigars. It is therefore not possible to determine precisely the influence of the time spent in storage to date. However, the character of the blend suggests that the tobaccos are well fermented. The brief initial sharpness disappears quickly, giving way to a stable balance. As the cigar already appears harmonious today, it is reasonable to assume that further ageing is likely to result in additional roundness rather than fundamental changes.

The SAN MARTÍN Robusto It has a smooth and consistent character. The focus is on a stable smoke profile, a harmonious balance and a steady development rather than dramatic changes. The clean construction and reliable burn reinforce this impression. Anyone looking for an uncomplicated cigar with a controlled progression of strength and a well-balanced blend will find here a cigar whose character is defined above all by consistency.
