New flame in Leipzig: StarkeZigarren takes over the Sächsische Pfeifenstube!

Tradition meets modernity: StarkeZigarren is writing the next chapter in Leipzig. Leipzig is one of Germany's most dynamic metropolises - characterised by industry and culture, with one of the country's most attractive railway stations, its own airport and a population of around 630,000. And just under two hours away from Berlin, the headquarters of StarkeZigarren, a new chapter is now opening for the company, whose roots lie in Passau and Lübeck.

In spring 2025, something happens on a sales tour that you can't plan - but you immediately sense that there's more in the air than just a nice chat about product ranges.

The team from StrongCigars visits a long-established pipe shop in Leipzig. A traditional shop that has stood for passion, expertise and genuine craftsmanship for decades. And in the midst of pipes, tobaccos and stories, a sentence is uttered that sets everything in motion: Owner Lutz Merker is looking for a successor from 2026.

Further conversations and phone calls quickly lead to something concrete. And at some point it becomes clear: StarkeZigarren will take over the Sächsische Pfeifenstube in Leipzig.

A traditional shop with heart and history

The Saxon pipe room is centrally located - close to the university and Leipzig's old town, surrounded by neighbourhoods where Leipzig pulsates: Music Quarter, Südvorstadt, Old Town. A place where people who are looking for character - not mass-produced goods - pass by every day.

For 28 years Lutz Merker has characterised this business with dedication. His focus: Pipes and pipe tobacco. So far, cigars have been more of a supporting actor - present, but not in the limelight.

What makes this shop special is not just the product range, but also the Craft DNA. Lutz Merker pursued his passion all the way to Turkey, where he personally watched the production of Meerschaum pipes saw. And: He built up a special expertise in the Pipe repair an area that only a few people have really mastered today.

It is precisely this heritage that StarkeZigarren not only wants to respect, but preserve and continue.

On 2 January 2026, Lutz Merker handed over the reins to StarkeZigarren

The starting shot was fired on 02 January 2026StarkeZigarren took over the Leipzig shop. The idea is not to rebuild the history of the Pfeifenstube - but to to continue writing them.

StarkeZigarren brings its many years of experience in the field of Premium cigars in. Even the tried and tested remains: House brands are to be continued, as are the popular Pipe courses. And because tradition does not mean standing still, the Spring 2026 one Careful renovation planned: modernise without losing character.

Lounge, tastings, gourmet culture: a place to stay

They were deeply impressed by the history and passion of the previous owner. They see it as a great responsibility - and at the same time an opportunity - to continue this life's work and enrich it with their own cigar expertise. Leipzig offers an ideal environment for this.

With the takeover, StarkeZigarren is expanding its stationary commitment and setting an example for growth in the premium segment - always with the goal in mind, Expertise and a culture of enjoyment to connect.

And there is already a first preview that arouses curiosity: a cigar creation with the name „Leipzig night play“ is in progress. Dedicated to the cultural city of Leipzig - intended as a gift and souvenir, especially for tourists. Currently in Nicaragua still on Blend and design filed.

The Saxon pipe room: How it all began

Exactly 28 years Lutz Merker's „Pfeifenstube“ adventure began in Leipzig. In the beginning, the business was Heinrichs pipes in Cologne as a franchise concept in order to minimise the risk. However, Merker soon became independent of Cologne and gradually built up the Saxon pipe room as an independent address.

Until the handover on 30.12.2025 his pipe shop attracted pipe clubs from all over the region - proof that specialist retailers are strong when they offer more than just goods: namely attitude, ability and personality.

And it is precisely this story that will continue from 2026 - with respect for the origins and fresh energy for everything that is to come.
