Maduro wrapper: sweet, dark and full of character

The Maduro wrapper is a special highlight in the world of cigars. With its dark color, natural sweetness and intense aromas, it delights many aficionados. Today we take a closer look at what makes this wrapper leaf so unique.

What is a Maduro wrapper?

Maduro means: dark!

⭕️ ❌ STOP! Don't just believe what you read on the internet. Because the meaning of "dark" is wrong.

Maduro is Spanish and means "ripe". It is a dark cover sheetwhich is the result of prolonged fermentation and special drying processes. ColorFrom dark brown to black (Oscuro).

Special features of this cover sheet

Natural sweetness: Due to the longer maturing process sweetish notes of chocolate, coffee and molasses. But everyone has a different sensory system and perceives the taste differently. Of course, the overall blend of the cigar also plays a role.

Complex flavorsIntense flavor, often with notes of earth, spices and leather. These wrappers are full of flavor, but often milder than they look. Because: The strength of a cigar is in the filler. But: the wrapper leaf gives the cigar a lot, a lot, a lot, a lot of flavor. Try removing the wrapper from your favorite cigar. You won't finish it, guaranteed! 😝

  1. I consider a Partagas Maduro 3 and a COHIBA Maduro 5 Genios to be true aromatic pleasure experiences that make you dream.

  2. I like to enjoy a cigar from CAO's Session series from time to time. Although the wrapper is called Oscuro (dark), I like to think of it as Maduro. As soon as you light the cigar, you can feel a fine sweetness, an oily feel and a broad aroma bouquet unfolds immediately.

        1. Thanks, Mark. I can never tell which wrapper is cooked and which is not. A video would be helpful to see if you can tell visually when the wrapper is smouldering. Maybe a virtual message comes up "cover sheet cooked". 😂

  3. I associate Maduro with Brazilian long fillers. There used to be the very fine Sao Vicente from Regaliafina. Unfortunately, it is no longer produced today. The puros from Alonso Menendez (who was also the founder of the Montecristo brand) come close. Always a slight sweetness in the smoke.
If it should be a little more noble and Maduro, then the composition of the A. Fuente Anejo 48 is my favorite!

  4. I once had one with a Cameroon Maduro wrapper. I think it was a Fuente with the sea apple wrapper. It was really great. Unfortunately I can't remember the name of the cigar.

  5. It often looks so beautiful, really oily and classy. This makes the cigar not only good, but also beautiful to look at. I smoked the Davidoff Maduro Toro when it came out a few months ago, I read the report here at ZiZo with the ice wine. It was very strong but also tasted great. I didn't have any ice wine but a rum with it. It was really great.

  6. I used to think that dark cigars were automatically strong. But that's not true at all! I once tried a Maduro that was really mild and sweet - a real surprise. Since then I've known that you shouldn't be fooled by the color. It's best to just try it out and experience it for yourself! 😊
