Origin of the Robusto format
Where does the term „Robusto“ come from and why is the format so popular? The name „Robusto“ comes from the Spanish and means „robust“ or „solid“. It is also often translated as „strong“, but I think that is wrong. The format developed mainly in the 1980s, when cigars were supposed to become more compact and at the same time more intense in flavour. This format already existed before that, but less so.
The trend has moved away from large and slim formats towards shorter cigars that are packaged in a full enjoyment for a shorter time offer. But the manufacturers recognised another thing: a slim format, such as the Lancero or Panetela, is more difficult to roll. So the Robusto format was ideal for producing a cigar more easily and quickly.

Robusto as a modern format
Balance of time and enjoymentMany aficionados appreciate that a Robusto 45-60 minutes smoking time offers. Personally, I prefer the Robusto format of a cigar line for tastings. It offers a „compact“ flavour. When I test the same blend of the same cigar line, but in different formats, it is often the Robusto that tastes best to me.
The ring gauge as a game changerThe larger ring gauge (48-52) allows for a cooler combustion and the Fuller development of flavours. So they say. But I don't know whether this is scientifically proven. 😅
Influence on cigar production: Many manufacturers have perfected the Robusto format and have made it into a „Business card“ of your brand established. It is a handy format and can be rolled up quickly and easily.
Next week I will publish the opinions of the readers and what they have written about the Robusto.

Legendary status for me has the: Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure No. 2; a perfect cigar that exceeds all expectations. This cigar; when available; has a permanent place in my Marc André humidor.
I have 19 left, AGO13, and now I have 18 left after reading your comment and getting triggered. I didn't even realise I had this treasure in my humidor! Unbelievable. 🤔 So, now it's lit. Quiet please. 😅
actually already the Cohiba Robusto, even if it is much too expensive
But a few times a year, on public holidays, why not
But an aeroplane is much more expensive 🤣
Definitely the Partagas D4 🙂
The classic, marvellous. The strength max. 3 / 5 (my impression).
My favourite Robusto: Bolivar Royal Coronas
Interesting, isn't it? The cigar is labelled „Royal Coronas“, but is actually a Robusto.
