In the spring of 2025, something happens on a sales tour that cannot be planned—but is immediately apparent: there is more in the air than just a pleasant conversation about product ranges.
The team from Strong Cigars visits a long-established pipe shop in Leipzig. A traditional business that has stood for passion, expertise, and genuine craftsmanship for decades. And amid pipes, tobacco, and stories, a sentence is uttered that sets everything in motion: Owner Lutz Merker is seeking a successor starting in 2026.
Further discussions and phone calls quickly lead to something concrete. And at some point, it becomes clear: StarkeZigarren will take over the Sächsische Pfeifenstube in Leipzig.
A traditional business with heart and history
The Saxon Pipe Shop Centrally located—close to the university and Leipzig's old town, surrounded by neighborhoods where Leipzig comes alive: the music district, Südvorstadt, and the old town. A place where people come every day looking for character—not mass-produced goods.
For 28 years Lutz Merker has shaped this business with dedication. His focus: Pipes and pipe tobacco. Cigars have tended to play a supporting role up to now – present, but not in the spotlight.
What makes this store special is not only its product range, but also its Craftsmanship DNA. Lutz Merker pursued his passion all the way to Turkey, where he personally oversaw the production of meerschaum pipes viewed. And: He built up special expertise in the pipe repair on – an area that few people really master today.
StarkeZigarren not only wants to respect this heritage, but also to preserve and continue.
On January 2, 2026, Lutz Merker handed over the reins to StarkeZigarren.
The starting signal was given on January 2, 2026: StarkeZigarren took over the Leipzig store. The idea is not to convert the Pfeifenstube building, but rather to to continue writing them.
StarkeZigarren brings its many years of experience in the field of premium cigars . The tried and tested also remains: private labels should be continued, as should the popular pipe courses. And because tradition does not mean standing still, the Spring 2026 one careful renovation Planned: modernize without losing character.
Lounge, tastings, culture of enjoyment: a place to stay
A small but exquisite new Pipe and Cigar Lounge – a place to linger, taste, and exchange ideas. In addition, there are regular tastings planned. The vision: a meeting place where Pipe enthusiasts, cigar aficionados and – hopefully – also spirits collector feel at home.
Leipzig is not just getting “another specialty store,” but a place that Culture of enjoyment takes seriously: with knowledge, with atmosphere, with time.
„Building bridges between tradition and the future“
Sebastian Gollas from StarkeZigarren sums it up:
She was deeply impressed by the history and passion of the previous owner. She sees it as a great responsibility—and at the same time an opportunity—to continue this life's work and enrich it with her own cigar expertise. Leipzig offers the ideal environment for this.
With this acquisition, StarkeZigarren is expanding its brick-and-mortar presence and signaling its commitment to growth in the premium segment—always with the goal of, Professional expertise and a culture of enjoyment to connect.
And there is already a first preview that arouses curiosity: a cigar creation called „Leipzig Night Piece“ is currently in progress. Dedicated to the cultural city of Leipzig—intended as a gift and souvenir, especially for tourists. Currently being developed in Nicaragua still at Blend and design filed.
The Saxon Pipe Shop: How it all began
Exactly 28 years Lutz Merker's „Pfeifenstube“ adventure began in Leipzig. At the beginning, the business with Heinrich's pipes in Cologne connected – as a franchise concept to minimize risk. But Merker soon became independent from Cologne and gradually built up the Saxon Pipe Shop as a separate address.
Until handover on December 30, 2025 His pipe shop attracted pipe clubs from across the region—proof that specialist retailers are strong when they offer more than just goods: namely attitude, ability, and personality.
And this story will continue from 2026 onwards – with respect for our origins and fresh energy for everything that lies ahead.
