InterTabac 24 exclusive: Cigars and revolutions - an interview with Jeremy Casdagli

I'm here with Jeremy from Casdagli Cigars, and as usual he's busy. There are a lot of people waiting for him, so I thought we should perhaps hurry up a bit. But Jeremy remains very relaxed: "Yes, yes, everything's fine," he says and smiles.

Cigar Journal Award winner for the second year in a row
We are talking about the great Cigar Journal awards evening on Thursday. It was a wonderful evening, and Casdagli Cigars was honored once again. "This is now the second year in a row that Villa Casdagli has won the award for the best cigar brand from other countries," he says proudly. Only just ahead of Casa Turrent, by around one percent. So it was a neck-and-neck race!

Last year, he recalls, it was the title of best cigar brand from Costa Rica. But this year they have secured the title as the leading brand among international cigar brands. It's a sign of how much the brand has grown in recent years. "This is really something big," adds Jeremy.
Master of his trade
But we don't want to go into too much detail - after all, time is short. He raves about Villa Casdagli and its wonderful line of cigars, which are made in Costa Rica. "The blender, Olman Guzman, is a master of his trade," he explains. "And through our collaboration with Tabacos de Costa Rica, we have gained access to Peruvian tobacco, which has helped us create a unique and rich but sweet blend."
Then we talk about Cigar Kings, which distributes Casdagli cigars in Germany. I ask Jeremy how this partnership came about. "It was a very natural development," he says. "Philip from Cigar Kings knows the market very well and it worked very well for all of us to join forces."
Together, they now not only share the German market, but also markets in the Middle East and Eastern Europe. "It makes sense to pool our resources," he says. "And the advantage for our customers is that they receive consolidated deliveries."

Revolution and generals
While we're talking, Jeremy comes up with an addition to his range. "Do you know our 'Brothers of the Saber'?" he asks me. Of course I know them, and Jeremy tells me the fascinating backstory: his love of Napoleonic history, which he developed as a child, and how this cigar is a tribute to historical generals. Each year the series honors a general on both sides of the conflict. Last year it was Prussia and France, this year France and Austria - and next year? Great Britain is on the agenda.

I find his anecdote about Radetzky, the Austrian general, particularly interesting. Jeremy tells how Radetzky and his officers marched through Milan smoking cigars, which ultimately led to an uprising and the start of the first Italian War of Independence. "It all started with smoking a cigar," says Jeremy and laughs. The story is incredible, and Jeremy has researched it vividly. "The European monarchies never found peace again, and all because of a cigar," he adds.

At the end of our conversation, Jeremy thanks me and I thank him. It was a fascinating insight into the world of cigars and their historical significance. "Next year," he says, "we'll have even more exciting stories. And I hope that my family will be involved." I'm curious.
