From tobacco leaf to maduro: a look behind the scenes
The Maduro wrapper is the result of patience, craftsmanship and special processes. Today you will learn how a dark, sweetish maduro is created from a green tobacco leaf. But - yikes - sometimes the leaves are cooked to speed up the process. Still going!

Choosing the right tobacco leaf
Maduro wrappers come from the top leaves of the tobacco plant (ligero). These leaves are thicker because they get more sun and are rich in oils.
Fermentation and maturation
Longer fermentation:
- The leaves are fermented at higher temperatures (approx. 50-60°C).
- This develops the dark color and natural sweetness.
Drying:
- Some leaves undergo additional drying phases to intensify their color.
Cooking: Yes, really, this is done to speed up the process. I'm not a fan of this method. In order to reduce costs, the fermentation process is accelerated in some wrappers by using additives to achieve a darker color.
Myth about Maduro leaves
Not colored! Many believe that these wrapper leaves are dyed - this is wrong. The dark color is created natural through fermentation. But, no rule without exception: who knows what has already been tried... or rather: what is still being done.

One cigar that I really liked was CigarKings Maduro Robusto.
I found the Camacho Triple Maduro Gordo very tasty. Unfortunately I can't get them anywhere anymore....
Oh yes, that was one of my favorite cigars "back then". I also think it's a shame that production has been discontinued.
@vasilij the Eiroa CBT Maduro Robusto would otherwise be an alternative.
💨 THANK YOU!
PLEASE... 😉
I found the Undercrown 10 from Drew Estate very delicious 😋
El Sueño, Churchill Dos Horas Maduro.
Not included in the question, but still worth mentioning is the rum with the same name. The Maduro leaves are the donors for this exquisite & noble note...
The maduro leaves are the dispensers for the rum? I've also drunk rum with a tobacco leaf in the bottle. I didn't like it at all.
This one is delicious. I will send or bring you a bottle
Oh you holy cigar! I'm not a big drinker 😂 But yes, you are of course very welcome at my place, let's have a nice smoke. Please send me your coordinates to genuss@zigarren.zone and I'll call you for an appointment. I look forward to that!
