Cigars such as the Joya de Nicaragua Clasico, VegaFina, Henry Clay War Hawk, Vegueros or Flor de Copán are well suited as they are mild and aromatic.
What accessories do I need as a cigar beginner?
You will need a cutter, a cigar lighter, a small humidor, a hygrometer and a cigar ashtray.
How do I store cigars properly?
Cigars are stored at 68-72 % humidity in a humidor or tupperador, not in the fridge!
Can I buy cigars online?
Yes, many reputable online stores offer starter packs, good descriptions and fast delivery. Pay attention to ratings and storage conditions!
How long do you smoke a cigar?
Depending on the format, between 30 and 90 minutes (or even longer, up to 2 hours). A Robusto takes around 45 minutes - ideal for getting started.

Why cigars fascinate
Cigars are more than just tobacco. They are rituals, relaxation, pleasure. The moment when the flame kisses the wrapper is a quiet prelude to something personal. For beginners, this is the start of a new chapter full of discoveries - and questions: Which cigar suits me? What do I need with it? What should I not overlook when buying online?
What you should look out for when buying from an online store
1. reputable dealer:
Look for certificates, customer reviews and transparent information about storage and shipping. A trustworthy online store delivers fresh goods in secure packaging - often with a humidification system.
2. read cigar descriptions:
A good store describes flavors, strength and origin clearly. Mild to medium-strength cigars are ideal for beginners.
3. use trial packages:
Many stores offer so-called "samplers" - sets of 3-5 cigars with different flavors. Perfect for discovering your taste without spending a lot of money. Sometimes you can even get a complete set including tools and a small humidor.
4. return policy & customer service:
Even if tobacco products are often excluded from exchange for hygiene reasons, good customer service will answer questions quickly and competently. Use this contact!
Which cigars are suitable for beginners?
Here are some tried and tested recommendations that I love to smoke:
- Davidoff from the signature series: Very mild, very good workmanship, higher price.
- Flor de Selva: Wonderfully mild cigars, very good workmanship, very attractively priced.
- Gilbert de Montsalvat Signature Chubby: Little mock 😄 I love this cigar!
Start with formats that not too big are. A Robusto format (approx. 12-13 cm, 2 cm diameter) is enough for about 45 minutes of smoking time - ideal for beginners. Here you can find a general Overview at zigarren-online.ch of the most popular cigar formatsincluding the particularly beginner-friendly Robusto.

The classics among the cigar formats: Robusto, ToroGordo, Churchill and Panetela. However, the following applies to the latter: smoke it much more slowly than other formats, otherwise it will quickly overheat and the taste will be ruined.
What accessories do you need as a beginner?
Cigars are not cigarettes. They need to be loved, cared for and treated properly. The right accessories are simply part of this:
1. cigar cutter (cutter):
A V-cut or double-blade cutter ensures a clean cut. No scissors, no kitchen knife!
2. cigar lighter:
The jet flame is suitable to start with. Later you can switch to the soft flame. The jet flame is very precise. Important: Do not hold the flame to the tobacco, but roast the cigar slowly.
3. ashtray with shelf:
Cigars don't like to be moved around frantically all the time. They like to rest - and a special cigar ashtray provides the right surface for storing them.
4. humidor:
A must if you have more than 3 cigars. Cigars need round 68-72 % Humidityotherwise they will become brittle or moldy. For beginners, a small table humidor or a Tupperador with humidifier is sufficient.
5. hygrometer:
Measures the humidity in the humidor. Most are too imprecise. My recommendation to start with: buy the BOVEDA packs with 72%. Then you don't even need a hygrometer.
The first smoke - what to look out for?
- Do not inhale! Cigar smoke is enjoyed, not inhaled.
- Smoke slowly: Max. 1-2 puffs per minute. Otherwise the cigar will get too hot.
- Do not constantly re-fire: It is better to let it cool down a little and light it again. Don't wait too long, otherwise the aroma will be gone.
- Take your time: Consciously plan 30-60 minutes - no cigars between the door and the door.
- No wind: If you smoke outside, make sure there is no wind. This can cause the cigar to overheat because it is constantly being "blown", so to speak.
Mistakes that beginners often make
- Store cigars in the refrigerator ❌
- Cutting cigars with scissors ❌
- Buying too many cigars at once ❌ But you'll make this mistake over time anyway 😁
- Underestimate strength ❌ (better to start mildly!)
Conclusion: The cigar beginner's guide as a start to a new life of enjoyment
Smoking a cigar is not a status symbol or a cliché (yes, it is for all those who want to make a big deal of it). It is a personal ritual. The Cigar Beginners Guide gives you the basis for a relaxed and harmonious start. With the right cigars, the right accessories and a little curiosity, your first puff will be a moment you'll never forget.

It is important to buy your first cigars personally in a specialist store. Advice is the be-all and end-all.
When buying for the first time, buy 2, better 3 pieces to experience the basic taste of a vitola and to realize that, as with wine, no two cigars taste the same.
Cigars are a handmade natural product, which is subject to certain variations in feel, taste and aromas.
Online or retailer? For connoisseurs of the video with Urs Portmann, this question is superfluous ...
Nothing against online shopping, I just love the personal contact.
I agree with you.
Nowadays, however, young people get their information online first. If an online store offers good information, they will buy there. That's why an online store is not just an online store. Most of the operators have not yet understood this. And: making an excellent online store fit for the future with an integrated guide costs money and a lot of time. Exciting business, exciting business.
